Leadership and Collaboration

What is InTASC Standard #10: Leadership and Collaboration

With the momentous challenges facing today’s teachers, the teaching community needs exemplary professionals that can inspire them through leadership and collaboration. This is the significance of InTASC Standard #10, which recognizes the ripple effect of strong leadership in the education profession. Not only does leadership and collaboration have direct impacts on teachers, but these practices also lead to the implementation of new practices that affect instruction and classroom management. As a result, students gain access to higher quality education and their local communities will see the rise of students with the potential to achieve great things.

Artifacts for InTASC Standard #10:

Instructional Technology Video

One way that all teachers can improve their practice is by evaluating technology use in the classroom. In this instructional technology video, I introduce educators to Pear Deck, a transformative platform for collaboration and differentiation. The video explores Pear Deck’s features for enhancing lesson plans with interactive templates, engagement activities, and formative assessments in a step-by-step guide. This artifact aligns with InTASC Standard #10 and its focus on the value of the teaching community. Teachers represent the target audience of this video, which I created to tackle the issue of classroom technology integration. By the end of the video, I hope that teachers use their new insights to enhance the quality of their students learning, and by extension, the quality of their teaching abilities.

Careers in Education Panel

Throughout the Spring 2023 semester, I worked closely with the Center for Career Development and Life Design (CDLD) at Hollins University to plan and host a panel discussion on careers in education. I proposed this session in the fall of 2022 to address the lack of career resources for aspiring educators and to promote the teaching licensure program at Hollins. Several months of planning, outreach, and promotion resulted in a productive discussion between Hollins students and guest panelists on topics ranging from work-life balance to undergraduate teacher preparation to the job search process. This project aligns with InTASC Standard #10 because it required me to demonstrate leadership and collaboration within my undergraduate licensure program. I took this initiative to advocate for the needs of education students at Hollins, but this project would not have been possible without the help of the CDLD and Kappa Delta Pi, the national education honor society at Hollins. This project challenged me to become an active member of my campus and it helped me form professional contacts within the educator community in Roanoke.

Kappa Delta Pi Leadership Role

My involvement in the education profession extends into my role as the Social Media Chair of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) at Hollins University. KDP is a national honor society in education that recognizes aspiring educators and provides resources for professional development. My role in the Hollins chapter of KDP is to share our organization’s achievements and outreach opportunities across social media platforms. For example, our organization recently hosted an induction ceremony for incoming members of KDP. I posted pictures and congratulations on our social media page to recognize the work these students accomplished and to celebrate their journey towards a career in education. My role as Social Media Chair of KDP represents InTASC Standard #10 because it demonstrates my commitment to advancing the profession. The education department at Hollins University is small but supportive, and I believe it is my responsibility to become a mentor by assuming leadership within the department. I hope that this inspires rising first-year students to join our community and gain a quality student teaching experience at Hollins University.
